When we visited London last week the girls each had a travel journal to write and draw in. We collected and kept tickets and receipts to glue in…all reminders of what we did and what we enjoyed.
We have done this over the last few years, it’s a little tradition that has evolved. This year, before we left, we lifted last year’s journals off the bookshelf. It was so fun to reminisce over little things we had done and funny stories they had written. It led to such giggles and conversation, reminders of things I had forgotten too.
Building on this I think, made the girls really value what they were doing and they put so much effort in.
Their 3 books are so different…Maddie’s of course, is mainly a book of drawings and tickets and pamphlets glued in. She included such detail, counting the number of capsules for the London Eye and the colour of the Rib we took our boat tour in. I love encouraging these wee details, even in such little ones.
The older two really loved adding detail and little quirks to their writing and lots of discussion and chat added to this. It was so lovely to listen to them chatting over their day. They’re going to love these so much when they’re older!
I thought this list of questions was such a great idea for starting points for older ones to think about their writing a little more. Looking up other travel journals would also make a great starting point for kids, helping them to visualise the type of things they might write and do, before they leave.
Now I just wish I had kept one too!!!
