For ages I’ve been talking about making myself a shift top using some bordrais anglais my mum had given me.
I used a vest I wear as a basis although I was too generous in my seam allowance and too eager to finish without trying on to check my measurements so had to redo my seams to make the whole vest narrower!
I am really happy with the outcome though and it will definitely be a staple in my summer wardrobe.
// You will need a vest you wear (or pattern if you have one), fabric, lining fabric and trim (optional)
// Lay out the vest on your fabric…I folded it in half to get a symmetrical curve around the neckline. Measure the seam allowance and cut out.
// Repeat with the lining fabric…I then used these as one whole piece – lining and fabric.
// Repeat this with the back pieces, giving these a more gentle curve for the neckline.
// Place fabric and lining right sides together and then sew around neckline.
// Snip the edge to allow the neckline to sit flat.
// Turn right way round and topstitch along the same line of curve.
// Roll the arm hole edge gently on itself to give a clean edge and sew along this narrow seam.
// Place the two shoulder pieces together and sew. Press.
// Place the two shoulder pieces together and sew. Press.
// Identify the position for your darts…I used this tutorial to keep me right when sewing each dart.
// Sew up the side seams.
// Sew up the side seams.
// I then did a zigzag stitch along the edge to prevent fraying.
// Sew the trim the whole way around the base.
// That’s it…you’re done.
I’m going to now have a go at another one in a linen fabric and an a line dress for the girls…can’t stop me now!!

Cute! I am really loving the eyelet fabric this season. The addition of the trim was a perfect choice.
