Sisters are an amazing thing.
Growing up with 2 brothers and a sister I never imagined I would have a single sexed family. Sometimes I wonder would there be a big difference with a boy in the mix.
They are each so different but in many ways so similar.
Competitive, boisterous, lively, vivacious, giggly, tender hearted…the list could go on. Our house is noisy and yet I have always felt I needed to find a peace in the chaos. Not to retreat and recover but to stand in the midst, content and calm.
Probably considered a relatively laid back person I still have my triggers; the sibling rivalry and squabbles that press my buttons. I want them to look out for each other, to be kind, consider the other…talk, discuss, giggle. They do do this but often though, they spar, frustrate, tease and wrestle. I try, try, try to leave them to sort out their quarrels, to negotiate and process through without adult intervention.
I find it hard though.
Expectations have a large part to play…they are only little. Practising in the safety of their home life lessons that will be harder later on. Sharpening their teeth.
I need to bear it.
To model tenderness, gentleness, grace to them so they learn to pass it on.
Point them to the true way.
In this generation more than any, I think my girls will need to be strong. A strength of character and resilience that will stand against the many pressures they will face.
I love that they are energetic, exuberant and fiercely passionate…
…I would just like to bottle a bit and keep some for myself!
