Yesterday was my birthday.
Probably a lot of the celebration revolves around our girls and their need to mark an occasion. They blow the candles, open the presents and sing the songs.
There is an innocence in their celebration, their excitement, their declaration of love.
Birthdays, more than a purpose for gift giving, are a celebration of the person…a thankfulness for the day they were born and an opportunity to honour them. And so, it doesn’t matter that I don’t get to open the cards or the presents…or to blow out the candles. It doesn’t even matter that I’m not the focus of attention because I am thankful for our wee family unit, that they love me and look deep into my eyes to see that I have appreciated and acknowledged their efforts, their love and celebrate with them.
Being with them is the gift…celebrating with them…even if they do secretly eat the chocolate off my cake!
